What needs saying here is simply that this is one of the best pizza places in central Dublin, certainly one of the longest-established — it’s been in operation for 25 years now — and an old favorite of our household. Its first incarnation was as a sibling to its older-sister restaurant The Independent Pizza Company in the north city, on what was then the main road to Dublin Airport. Eventually the South Anne Street location shifted emphasis to something more varied and bistro-like, and its name changed accordingly.
But the pizza rightfully maintains a starring role. Peter likes to say we’ve eaten enough pizza at the Gotham venue to pave South Anne Street (which is probably fairly close to true, though don’t ask me for the exact math on this right now) and haven’t had a bad one in all that time. (No argument on that last count whatsoever.) These are straightforward New York-style thin-crust pizzas; you can either order ready-designed ones off the menu or build your own from an ample list of ingredients. (The one in the image above is one of Peter’s preferred builds, with salami, sundried tomatoes and ‘nduja. I think there was probably garlic in that one too, as my favorite builds routinely involve extra garlic [as well as extra mozzarella and sometimes smoked applewood cheddar] and Peter would have had some in self-defense.)
Besides the stone-oven-baked pizzas, there are assorted pastas, steaks, fish dishes, burgers and salads: a smattering of BBQ imported from Gotham’s Stillorgan branch (where their imported BBQ smoker lives): good beers and wines.
